Personal Statement
My name is Adrian Montalvo and I'm from Brownsville, Texas. Even though I was born in the US, I spent most of my life living in Mexico. I moved into the US on August 2014. Soccer is one of my biggest passions. I started playing when I was 5 and I’ve been playing very competitive soccer since I’m 12, always in Mexico, always amateur. Soccer has taught me discipline and hard work. It showed me to win but also showed me how to come back when you lose. I have learned teamwork and I also enjoyed the advantages of playing as a team.
After a year and a half, I have improved my grades and foresee better ones in the future. I see myself as a successful biotechnology graduate. I would like to help society by either improving their health or by helping them have a better lifestyle.
A few years ago, after a showcase, I was invited to spend two weeks at the Asia Pacific Football Academy in New Zealand, . APFA is a development academy associated with the English soccer team Chelsea. This has been one of the greatest experiences in my life. I had the chance to learn new skills, work on my technique, and define a career path but, the most important thing I learned was to identify my weaknesses. Neither my soccer skills, my body or my grades where at an elite level, they are still not. But I learned that school is as important as soccer and that it requires time (10,000 hrs. according to a study) to excel at something. 10,000 hrs. is a lifetime. But I needed to start somewhere and I did. Since then, I have spent countless hours at the gym, at the practice field, and at my desk doing school work. I had sacrifice a lot of time with my friends and family but I’m starting to see an improvement on my grades, my technique and my physique.
I’m looking for an opportunity to demonstrate my skills and play at the next level. I’m still far away for completing 10,000 hrs. of practice but I have a significant amount of them on me. I might not be able to reach all of them but I’m willing to go the distance if somebody is willing to bet on me. Every day is made to do something in your life and I'm ready to do my best in every one of them.
