Area code 404, which has been associated with the city of Atlanta dating back to the beginning of the use of telephone area codes in 1947, and area code 678, which was initially put in place in the late 90s as a primarily cell-phone area code for metro Atlanta, have both been exhausted.
New telephone numbers in the metro Atlanta area will be issued with the 470 area code, according to the North American Numbering Plan Administration.
Existing telephone numbers won't change, but new numbers being issued will start showing up with the new area code.
