His father Leonard Shapiro is a computer scientist and a retired professor. Leonard is an honorary professor at Portland State University.
A graduate of Reeds College, Shapiro earned his doctorate of philosophy from Yale University in 1969. After obtaining the degree, he became an assistant professor of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota from 1969 to 1976.
Furthermore, the computer scientist was the chairman of the division of mathematical sciences at North Dakota University from 1976 to 1977.
He took the chair of the computer science department at Portland State University in 1987. At present, he serves as a professor emeritus at the institution.
Elayne Halpern Shapiro
His mother Elayne Shapiro is a former university communications professor.
Mrs. Shapiro is the proud mother of three children, Daniel, Joseph, and Ari.
