The No. 1 player in Alabama and one of the top wide receivers in the nation is staying in state. Cam Coleman, a five-star prospect from Phenix City, Ala., announced on Friday that he has flipped his commitment from Texas A&M to Auburn. Here’s what you need to know:
- Coleman is ranked No. 7 overall and the No. 3 wide receiver in the Class of 2024 in the 247Sports Composite. His coach at Central High School in Phenix City is Patrick Nix, a former quarterback at Auburn and the father of Oregon QB Bo Nix.
- He originally committed to Texas A&M on July 4 over Auburn, LSU and Clemson. Auburn’s 2024 class jumped from No. 17 to No. 11 nationally.
- Auburn finished the regular season with a 6-6 record in 2023. The Tigers lost in dramatic fashion to Alabama in the Iron Bowl, thanks to Isaiah Bond’s late touchdown catch.
What this means for Auburn
Hugh Freeze and the Tigers struggled on the field in Freeze’s first year with the program. But Freeze is winning big time on the recruiting trail as his 2024 class continues to take form. Coleman is the 17th commit in this class, the second five-star, the seventh top-150 prospect and the 14th blue-chipper. For some context, Auburn signed a total of three top-150 recruits in the 2022 and 2023 classes.

The Tigers already had their quarterback of the future in place in Arkansas legacy Walker White, who has to be thrilled he just landed a weapon of Coleman’s caliber in the passing game. Coleman is on pace to be the program’s third-highest-rated signee in the modern era and top wide receiver, according to 247Sports’ data. Auburn’s average player rating of 91.99 is good for fifth nationally behind Georgia, Ohio State, Florida and Alabama. — Grace Raynor, college football reporter
