Residents of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, were left shocked when Barbara Iske was found dead in the driveway of her employer, Ann Marasco’s home.

The circumstances surrounding the Barbara Iske murder were strange, but a shocking revelation from Ann Marasco’s daughter, Madelynne Smith, provided the police with a significant breakthrough.

‘Nightmare Next Door: Conspiracy of Evil’ on Investigation Discover narrates the story of this incident and the investigation that led to the arrest of the criminals.

At the time of her murder, Barbara served as a bookkeeper for Ann Marasco.

What happened to Barbara Iske?

After receiving reports of a potential homicide on June 14, 2005, the investigation team arrived at Ann Marasco’s Grosse Pointe residence.

The authorities discovered the two close-range gunshot wounds that left Barbara Iske bleeding profusely on the driveway.

Furthermore, the autopsy report revealed that she was shot in the head and back from a relatively closer range.

The crime scene of the Barbara Iske murder didn’t yield many new leads; it was obvious that the culprits were in a rush and left rapidly.

Ann Marasco informed the police that Barbara had a bag with her, which was missing, along with her laptop.

The investigation of Barbara Iske murder case

The first investigation into Barbara Iske murder was complicated due to the lack of leads available to the police.

Despite carefully searching the crime scene and speaking to neighbors and witnesses, the police were unable to uncover any reliable leads.

Barbara had no known enemies; thus, her abrupt and terrible death stunned her friends and family.

However, Madelynne Smith, Ann Marasco’s daughter, arrived at the scene and provided crucial information.

She revealed that in 2004, her mother had removed Madelynne as a beneficiary from her will, leaving the entire estate to her brother, Joseph Marasco.

Madelynne tried to resolve the issue, and her mother eventually agreed to split the estate equally between Joseph and Madelynne.

This change strained Madelynne’s relationship with Joseph even further.

Joseph held Barbara responsible for the will change since she managed Ann’s accounts, including her estate.

Madelynne’s revelation implicated Joseph in the murder, and the police rounded up Ann’s employees, who witnessed Joseph’s hostility towards Barbara.

Moreover, Madelynne also claimed that Joseph killed Barbara to obtain her laptop containing Ann’s financial details.

With this evidence, the police focused on Joseph and began investigating his life.

Why did Joseph kill Barbara?

Initially, Joseph denied any involvement in the homicide but appeared cooperative.

However, the police uncovered testimonies from Joseph’s acquaintances, Andre Williams and Derrick Thompson, who implicated him in the crime.

Andre confessed that he hired Derrick as the getaway driver while he shot Barbara.

Joseph then took the bag containing the laptop.

With these testimonies and other evidence, the police arrested Joseph, Andre, and Derrick for their roles in the Barbara Iska murder.

Prior to the trial, prosecutors offered Andre Williams a deal in which, in exchange for pleading guilty to second-degree murder and a felony firearm charge, he would testify against his co-defendants.

The court sentenced Andre to 20 to 30 years in prison and two years for the gun charge after he accepted the deal in 2006.

In addition, Derrick Thompson and Joseph Marasco received sentences in 2006.

They were viewed as at fault for first-degree murder and a crime gun offense, bringing about lifelong incarceration without the chance of delivery.

The series claims that Joseph passed away while incarcerated two years after his sentence.

Currently incarcerated at the Muskegon Correctional Facility in Michigan, Andre will be eligible for release in 2028.
