Beck Weathers: A Survivor of the 1996 Mount Everest Disaster
Beck Weathers is an American pathologist with a net worth of $4 million. He is best known for surviving the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, where he and seven other clients were guided by Rob Hall. Weathers underwent radial keratotomy surgery, which resulted in his blindness due to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation and high altitude effects.
Despite his condition, Weathers promised Hall that he would wait on the Balcony until his guide came back down so they could descend. Hall passed away, and a blizzard struck, causing Weathers’ hands and feet to freeze. He was medically evacuated by a helicopter where his right arm was amputated halfway between his elbow and wrist, and all four fingers on his left hand were removed along with parts of his feet. His nose was also amputated and reconstructed.
Weathers authored the book “Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest” and was the subject of the films “Into Thin Air: Death on Everest” and “Everest.”
