The Kilbrannan Restaurant is named after the seafood-rich waters right outside. As you would expect, local seafood stars, with plump Kilbrannan Sound scallops exceptional, cooked simply to let the freshness burst through. Arran lamb tempts too, from the village of Pirnmill a little further north. The cheeseboard comes from Arran’s renowned production and is served, of course, with Wooleys of Arran ‘oaties’, the legendary wee oatcakes. Ice cream is from Arran Dairies, with 100 per cent Arran milk, and strawberries are from Kirkend on Arran’s east coast.
A wee whisky in the bar awaits afterwards – Arran now sports not one but two distilleries, and a brace of breweries – where you might find a friendly islander ready to fill you in all the latest island news, ok, gossip.
Breakfast is both buffet and à la carte. A range of cheese, meat and fruit tempts on the buffet. À la carte options feature local seafood and meats, with a full Scottish breakfast (complete with haggis and tattie scones) setting you up for a whole day. Fruit juices and coffees are served – like everything else – with a view of the water.
