Washington Huskies head football coach Chris Petersen will be with the team for the foreseeable future. On Tuesday, the school announced it extended his contract through the 2023 season.
Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated initially reported the deal on Monday and said the contract "gives Petersen what is believed to be the richest contract in the Pac-12" at an average annual salary of $4.875 million. Thamel wrote Petersen was previously set to make $4 million in the last two years of his previous deal.
"The University of Washington is such a special place, and it is a great fit for me and my family," Petersen said in the team's announcement. "I am honored to work alongside such a talented staff, and this extension demonstrates the University's commitment to investing in a championship program. I want to thank Jennifer Cohen for her leadership, as well as all the fans and donors who provide such incredible support of Husky football."
Petersen took over the Washington job before the 2014 season and directed an impressive turnaround. The Huskies hadn't won double-digit games since the 2000 campaign before he arrived, and they also went 0-12 in 2008 and 1-10 in 2004 during a particularly concerning stretch.
Petersen went 15-12 with two bowl appearances in his first two years with Washington and then led the program to a 12-2 record, College Football Playoff appearance and a Pac-12 title in 2016. In all, he is 27-14 with the Huskies after he went 92-12 in eight years at Boise State.
The Huskies figure to compete for a Pac-12 crown under Petersen again in 2017 thanks largely to the offensive trio of quarterback Jake Browning, wide receiver Dante Pettis and running back Myles Gaskin.
