TEL AVIV, Israel (CNN) -- Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, paid a 90-minute visit to the widow of assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin Thursday. It was Arafat's first visit to Israel since the Mideast peace process began.
Israel Radio reported that Arafat told Leah Rabin that her late husband "was a hero of peace but ... also my personal friend."
"My husband regarded you as his partner in peace," Mrs. Rabin reportedly told Arafat.
Arafat did not attend Yitzhak Rabin's funeral on Monday to avoid security risks. According to an aide, however, the PLO leader "insisted on personally paying his condolences to Mrs. Rabin."
His visit was not announced until Arafat returned to his home in the autonomous Gaza Strip late Thursday.
