HASSELT, Belgium -- Italy's Maria Elena Camerin upset fourth seed Karolina Sprem of Croatia 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Gaz de France Stars tennis tournament in Hasselt, Belgium.
Camerin, ranked No. 45 in the world, capitalized on some errors from Sprem in the opening set to force a breakthrough, and continued to dominate the Croat, ranked 27 places in front of her, in the second set.
Three other seeded players, including number one Elena Dementieva, reached the quarterfinals with routs of their opponents.
Francesca Schiavone of Italy and Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva also cruised through.
Dementieva, of Russia, beat Michaela Pastikova of the Czech Republic, 6-4 6-2, and fifth seed Schiavone swept past Nuria Llagostera of Spain 6-1, 6-0 in barely more than half an hour.
Schiavone will play Elena Bovina of Russia in Friday's quarterfinals.
Maleeva, the seventh seed, needed little more time to dispose of home player Els Callens 6-0, 6-1.
Maleeva, ranked No. 22 in the world, will meet former No. 1 Kim Clijsters in her quarterfinal match.
Clijsters, seeded two, made her return to the WTA Tour following a five-month injury layoff.
Henin-Hardenne drops out
Olympic champion Justine Henin-Hardenne has pulled out of next week's Porsche Grand Prix in Germany because she is still suffering from a virus which sidelined her earlier this year.
"She prefers to wait until she's back in shape," announced her website.
Earlier this week, the former world No. 1 said she was still troubled by the energy sapping virus which made her skip part of this season.
She was forced to rest after being diagnosed with the blood disorder in April. She came back to defend her French Open title in June only to take more rest after her second-round exit in Paris.
She won the Olympic title in Athens last month.
After that victory, she suffered a fourth-round upset defeat at the U.S. Open and has not played since. She said she had fallen ill again in the run-up to the Grand Slam tournament in New York and has been dogged by bouts of fatigue since.
After Filderstadt, Henin-Hardenne is due to play in the October 18-24 Swisscom Challenge before preparing for the season-ending WTA Championship from November 10-15.
