LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Two-time Academy Award winner Elizabeth Taylor had a benign tumor surgically removed from her brain Thursday, hospital officials said.
"Everything went as planned," in the high-tech surgery, said Ron Wise, a spokesman for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Taylor's tumor was in the left parietal lobe slightly above the ear. Although many tumors are benign, as in Taylor's case, brain tumors are considered serious because of the buildup of pressure within the skull. If a brain tumor is expanding, it can cause headaches, vomiting, loss of vision and speech difficulties.
Taylor's doctor, Martin Cooper, was to brief reporters on details of the surgery later Thursday. A spokeswoman for the Oscar-winning actress said earlier that Taylor was expected to recover fully.
The actress, who turns 65 on February 27, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for tests prior to the surgery.
Last Sunday, celebrities -- including Michael Jackson, Madonna and Cher -- gathered to honor the violet-eyed star at an early birthday party. The gala celebration raised money for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
