Jessie A. Barnes, Sr. affectionately known as “Buddy” was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.  Jessie was born on September 23, 1955 to the late Jesse Barnes, Jr. and Ernestine Fenner Barnes. He graduated from Cradock High School in the class of 1973.  Immediately upon graduation, Jessie enrolled in the apprenticeship program at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia.  While employed as a shipfitter and inspector, Jessie was able to travel and work in many shipyards throughout the United States, retiring in 2010 after 37 years of dedicated service.

Jessie was an avid and enthusiastic Dallas Cowboys Fans.  He was involved in the community in which he resided.  He was a member of the Olympian Sports Club, a charter member of the Boondock Social Club, Charles Peete Little League and Eastern Officials Association Baseball Umpires. 

Jessie was predeceased by his parents, Jesse and Ernestine Barnes, and his daughter, Jennifer A. Barnes.  His  memories will always be cherished by his children, Jesse A. Barnes of Charlottesville, VA and Jessica A. Barnes-Hill (Akinshe) of Chesapeake, VA; sisters, Mary L. Berry, Kill Devil Hills, NC, Jacqueline Barnes, Portsmouth, VA and Toxie Barnes, Suffolk, VA; grandchildren, India Barnes, Tyus Shelton, Bryn Shelton-Barnes,  Theo Shelton-Barnes and Amiri Jordan.  Also left to cherish his memories are his nieces and nephew, Danita Bryant, Delmarene Barnes and Ronald Ricks, Jr, along with a great niece and great nephew, other relatives and friends A special thank you to Karen Pope, his caregiver.
