Heartfelt Tributes:
The outpouring of grief from those who knew Katherine Young is a testament to the impact she had on the lives of those around her. Amy Alberg, a former student, expressed deep gratitude for Young’s kindness and generosity, remembering the music department as a safe haven.
I have no words. Katherine Young was an incredibly kind and generous teacher who genuinely cared and always made me feel like the music department was a safe space.
Thank you for giving amazing hugs when I need them and even when I didn’t. Thank you for letting 5 rogue seniors eat McDonald’s contraband in your classroom. Thank you for inviting me into chorus with open arms when I couldn’t fit band into my schedule. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Kirsten Oberoi, another colleague, shared memories of collaborative conversations and innovative teaching methods, illustrating how Young’s influence extended beyond the classroom.
Absolutely devastated to hear of another loss too soon of a beautiful life. I spent many hours talking shop with Katherine Young, and had the opportunity to observe her classroom and listen to her students. They shone with light and passion. She and I swapped ideas and her classroom was the first I had heard of “sound circles”, which lead the way to many, many amazing lessons in my own classroom. I tried to get her to work at my SSCC camp so many times. My heart breaks for her students, her family, and her school community. Even more so, my heart breaks for the future. I’m so sorry, Katherine. You will be so missed. Your impact on this earth has been great. Rest well, friend. Im so sorry you are gone.
