Kathy Fang's father Peter Fang is the owner and chef of House of Nanking. The restaurant is located in San Francisco.
Peter and his wife Lily opened the restaurant House of Nanking located on Kearny Street in San Francisco in 1988. He helped in selecting the location as well as made sure that the name of the restaurant would be something meaningful to him and his wife.
Even though the name of the restaurant is based in Nanking, at first the dishes that were served are not from there and it was made as authentic Shanghainese home cooking.
Later, after some time after their opening, he started to put his own spin on traditional Chinese cuisine which was a hit as it was something new. He started to cook various dishes and experimented with fusing traditional dishes with local ingredients.
After he started to provide these fusion dishes he started to realize that there was a long line of people who were waiting only to try his food. The customers were super hungry by the time they were at the table and making them wait any longer was not acceptable. As he wanted his customers to be given delicious food instantly as soon as they arrive he started to order for the customers himself rather than waiting for the customers to order.
It became the trademark of the restaurant that the chef ordered for them as it provided a faster service and the people loved it. The restaurant was not only known as the best Chinese restaurant in the area but also a restaurant where the owner does not let you order the food.
The owner of House of Nanking was becoming more and more famous every day and after some time the restaurant was listed in the Best of list as well as appeared in TV and articles such as San Francisco Chronicle, Lonely Planet, New York Times, Travel Channel, and many more.
In the year 1997, he and his wife expanded the restaurant including the kitchen, and also added more seats to meet the high demand. He had hired more employees as well as a sous chef to help him make more dishes. The restaurant has been open for more than 30 years and they still run the business in the same way that they did before. He also has a sister restaurant named Fang Restaurant which is located at 660 Howard Street in San Francisco with his daughter where he works as an Executive chef.
The father of Kathy celebrates on June 22 according to the Instagram post made by his daughter on the 22nd of June 2020. She captioned a series of photos wishing her father a happy birthday. She stated that he was her biggest hero and her forever role model. She thanked him for devoting his life to raising, supporting, and teaching her to become the person she is today and she added that it was incredible that he was doing the same with his grandkids.
