Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified from the tournament in a surprising turn of events at the French Open.

The event occurred after a ball girl was accidentally hit during their third-round match. The women’s doubles teams from Japan and Indonesia lost by a set to Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic and Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain, respectively. 

They held a 3-1 lead in the second set when the umpire decided to end the match.

The incident occurred when the Japanese player Kato hit a harmless lob toward the ball girl to assist with the game’s flow. 

However, the ball struck the girl, which left her in a vulnerable situation with tears rolling down her face. 

Initially, the umpire issued a warning to Kato, considering it an unintentional act. However, their opponents, Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo protested. 

They called for Kato and Sutjiadi’s disqualification based on the rule that any contact with ball persons or officials results in an automatic default. 

The disagreement between the players unfolded across the net, with Sorribes Tormo expressing concern for the crying ball girl and pointing out her injuries.

As a result, the tournament referee and the Grand Slam supervisor intervened, assessing the situation.

After discussions, they ultimately disqualified Kato and Sutjiadi, thus ending the match. 

Bouzkova acknowledged the unfortunate circumstances but accepted the referee’s decision, acknowledging that the rules were upheld. 

She mentioned that although she did not witness the impact, the ball girl displayed visible distress for a significant period.

This incident raises questions not only about the disqualification but also about the sportsmanship of the opposing team. 

Bouzkova claimed that her team witnessed the incident and recognized the girl’s distress. They advocated for further investigation by the supervisor based on their observations. 

The disqualification ultimately rested with the referee, who had the authority to make the final call.

Kato and Sutjiadi’s disqualification had an impact on the tournament, as Bouzkova and Sorribes Tormo advanced to the next round to face Ellen Perez from Australia and Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the USA.
