Michael Steinhardt is a hedge fund manager, investor, publisher, and philanthropist with a net worth of $1.2 billion. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and founded Steinhardt, Fine, Berkowitz & Co. in 1967, which later became Steinhardt Partners. The hedge fund had an annualized return rate of 24.5% for clients.
In the ’90s, Steinhardt Partners faced federal investigation over accusations of attempting to manipulate the short-term Treasury Note market and was fined $70 million. Steinhardt paid 75% of the fee without admitting wrongdoing. The hedge fund shut down at the end of 1995, and Steinhardt retired for nearly a decade.
In 2004, Steinhardt became chairman of Index Development Partners, which later became WisdomTree Investments. He is an active philanthropist for predominantly Jewish causes, including Taglit-Birthright Israel and New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
