Agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha said Wednesday that free-agent running back Myles Gaskin will sign a contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Gaskin will be signed to the Vikings' active roster one day after the deadline for NFL teams to cut their rosters down from 90 players to 53.
With the Miami Dolphins experiencing a logjam in the backfield, Gaskin was among their cuts on Tuesday.
After starring collegiately at the University of Washington, Gaskin was a seventh-round draft pick by the Dolphins in 2019. He played sparingly as a rookie before becoming a significant part of the offense in 2020 and 2021.
In 2020, Gaskin rushed for 584 yards and three touchdowns, while also catching 41 passes for 388 yards and two scores.
He followed that up the next season with career highs in rushing yardage (612), rushing touchdowns (three), receptions (49) and receiving touchdowns (four).
Due to a combination of injuries and coaching decisions, Gaskin was limited to just four games last season, rushing 10 times for 26 yards and catching four passes for 28 yards.
Gaskin was a nonfactor in head coach Mike McDaniel's offense, and fell behind the likes of Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr. and Salvon Ahmed in the running back pecking order.
Mostert, Wilson and Ahmed returned this year, plus the Dolphins used a third-round draft pick to select De'Von Achane, leaving Gaskin as the odd man out.
Gaskin should have the opportunity to vie for a major role in the Minnesota offense this season due to a lack of quality depth at running back.
Alexander Mattison is the Vikings' new starter after the release of four-time Pro Bowler Dalvin Cook, and there is little in the way of NFL experience behind him.
Ty Chandler, who was a 2022 fifth-round pick, rushed just six times for 20 yards as a rookie, while 2021 fourth-round pick Kene Nwangwu has rushed just 22 times for 75 yards in two seasons, primarily serving as a kick returner.
Gaskin's pass-catching acumen could put him in the mix to be the Vikings' third-down running back right out of the gates, which would perhaps be a productive role, as Cook and Mattison combined for 54 receptions last season.
The Vikings open their regular-season slate Sept. 10 with a home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
