TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Press Freedom index in 2022 saw a 1.86 point growth to 77.88 from the previous score of 76.02 last year.

The number is based on a survey conducted by the Indonesian Press Council involving PT Sucofindo (Persero) in completing the report. Press Council Chairperson Azyumardi Azra said this result should not make people complacent.

"In my opinion, I think we all agree that we should not be complacent just yet because I think the freedom of the press still has to be fought for," Azra said at the Sari Pacific Jakarta hotel on Thursday, August 25, 2022.

Over the last five years, Indonesia's press freedom index has increased. The National GPI in 2017 was 67.92, in 2018 it was 69, in 2019 it was 73.71, and in 2020 it was 75.27.

Azra said that the council continues to ensure the freedom of the press is guaranteed. Therefore, the results that are currently obtained are not the end for the sustainability of the press in Indonesia. "Don't think of press freedom, press freedom as something that has been completed. We have a lot of challenges," Azra said.

The Press Council conducted a survey of the 2022 Press Independence Index (IKP) in 34 provinces. There are three environments with 20 indicators being assessed. This survey involved 340 expert informants as respondents and 10 Members of the National Assessment Council (NAC).

Indonesia’s press freedom score is within the top three considerable scores as they are set between 100-90 (free), 70-89 (quite free), and 56-69 (partially free). Anything below is considered less free.
