Nebraska offensive coordinator Mark Whipple was injured on the sideline during Saturday’s game against Michigan. Here’s what you need to know:
- Michigan kickoff returner A.J. Henning made contact with Whipple after being pushed out of bounds on a play late in the first half.
- Whipple fell hard to the ground, was treated by medical personnel and remained in the Nebraska bench area until halftime before being carted to the locker room.
- Whipple stayed in the locker room early in the third quarter before working for most of the second half from the coaches’ booth.
Backstory
Whipple, 65, has dealt with an undisclosed medical issue this year. He required a cart to aid his mobility when Nebraska played at Rutgers on Oct. 7. Whipple, at the time, said he was OK, a prognosis echoed by interim coach Mickey Joseph, who described Whipple as the “toughest dude on the staff.” Whipple has appeared to get around more easily in recent weeks.

Nebraska quarterback Chubba Purdy was also injured in the second quarter. Purdy left after sliding awkwardly at the end of an 8-yard run to the Michigan 15-yard line. Purdy started for the second consecutive week in place of Casey Thompson, injured Oct. 29 in the Huskers’ loss against Illinois. Logan Smothers replaced Purdy.
