The community of Stratford, Ontario lost a beloved resident this month – Sherri

McLachlan passed away at the age of 61. Sherri touched countless lives over the years through her careers as a teacher and real estate agent, as well as her community service and volunteer work.

The news was announced by her husband, Jim McLachlan, on social media. He shared that Sherri had courageously battled cancer for the past couple of years before passing away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.

Tributes immediately began pouring in from colleagues, friends, former students and clients, a testament to the profound impact Sherri had in Stratford and beyond. As her real estate broker Jason Minnery so aptly put it, “Her loss will leave a void that simply can’t be filled.”

Originally from Mooretown, Ontario, Sherri studied at the University of Western Ontario before embarking on a rewarding 30-year teaching career. Her dedication and creativity as a teacher made learning engaging and impactful for the countless children she taught at North Egerton Public School.

In 2014, Sherri retired from teaching and became a real estate agent with Remax Stratford Realty, where she has been helping clients buy and sell homes for the last eight years. Her professionalism, knowledge of the Stratford market and natural ability to connect with clients made her remarkably successful.

In addition to her careers, Sherri also acted as President of the Teachers Bargaining Unit for the teachers in Stratford as well as taking on leadership roles in various local real estate boards and associations. This speaks to her commitment to bettering her profession and championing for the rights of others.

Outside of work, Sherri was heavily involved in the Stratford community. She served on the church board for her parish, as well as acting as the Director of Education for years. Sherri was also appointed to the Stratford Festival’s board of governors for two consecutive terms which she served faithfully and diligently.

Sherri also never missed an opportunity to volunteer her time to local charities and fundraising events. She coordinated the town’s largest fundraising gala – Cabaret Canadiana – for 18 years straight to raise money for important local causes and community groups. Her generous spirit and belief in giving back to her community knew no bounds.

In her personal life, Sherri cherished spending time with her husband, children and friends. She was an avid hockey mom, always proud to cheer on her sons from the stands. One of Sherri’s greatest joys was being a grandmother to Declan and constantly showering him with love and attention.

Sherri was a life well lived – she pursued everything she was passionate about with passion and courage. She enriched the lives of all those around her and leaves behind a profound and far-reaching legacy. Sherri will be greatly missed by her family, friends, students and the Stratford community at large.

As current Stratford mayor Dan Mathieson wrote, “Sherri was one of the truly great people to ever live in our community.” Her kind heart and giving spirit touched so many and the hole she leaves behind can never truly be filled. Sherri McLachlan will always be remembered for the love and care she showed to everyone within her path – she lived to give and give she did wholeheartedly.

Our deepest condolences to Sherri’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Stratford is lesser for her loss but far better for having been blessed with her presence for 61 wonderful years. May her legacy of caring for others and championing community live on in all the lives she touched. Rest in peace Sherri.
