Italian businessman Stefano Pessina, with a net worth of $13.9 billion, is a former nuclear engineer who transformed his family’s pharmaceutical wholesaler, Naples, into Alliance UniChem Group. In 2006, Alliance UniChem Group merged with the U.K. pharmacy chain Boots Group, and Pessina became the Executive Chairman of Alliance Boots. In 2007, Alliance Boots went private in a $22 billion deal with financing from Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. Pessina has a 13 percent stake in Walgreens Boots Alliance, earning him most of his fortune. He has been credited with 35 percent of the proceeds from a transaction in 2014 when Walgreens purchased the remaining 55 percent for $5.3 billion. Walgreens Boots Alliance had $117 billion revenue in 2016. Pessina also sits on Walgreen’s Board and on the Board of Directors of the Consumer Goods Forum and is the 6th richest man in Italy as of March 2013.
