Masters outright betting – who is paying the most each-way places?
NB The bookmakers paying the best each-way terms may not necessarily have the best odds for your selection. These terms will continue to change, so check back regularly for the bookies paying out on the most places. However, this is what was paid last year.
The Masters 2023 golf betting form guide
The 2023 Masters tees off at the Augusta National on Thursday and there are plenty of contenders to win the opening major of the year.
It promises to be another open contest in Georgia. We have delved into the top 10 in the betting ahead of the battle for the coveted Green Jacket.
Scottie Scheffler
World ranking – 1
Last five results – 1-T12-T4-1-4
Scheffler secured his first major by winning at Augusta last year after heading into the tournament in blistering form, and it has been a similar story this year with victories in the prestigious Phoenix Open and Players Championship.
He was fourth in the World Match Play last time out and has finished in the top 20 in his other two tilts at Augusta National, so he will have every reason to be confident about being the first successful defending champion since Tiger Woods in 2002.
Outright odds @ 7/1 with bet365
Rory McIlroy
World ranking – 2
Last five results – T32-T29-T2-MC-3
This is virtually the only big prize that McIlroy has not claimed and he would be only the sixth player to complete the grand slam of majors should he win this week.
He has finished in the top 10 in seven of his 14 visits, including second last year when he ended with a storming 64 to be three shots behind Scheffler. Won the Dubai Classic earlier this year.
Outright odds @ 7/1 with bet365
Jon Rahm
World ranking – 3
Last five results – 3-1-T39-WD-T31
The Spanish star, who has one US Open to his name, was in storming form at the turn of the year, going on a run of five wins from eight tournaments, but he has gone off the boil a bit at the wrong time.
He withdrew from the Players Championship with a stomach bug after the first round and failed to live up to the hype at the World Match Play> But he has four Augusta top-10 finishes, so it is a course he likes and he could certainly come to the party.
Outright odds @ 9/1 with bet365
Jordan Spieth
World ranking – 16
Last five results – MC-T4-T19-T3-T31
Spieth relishes Augusta which probably goes quite a way towards explaining why he is so high in the outright market. It is difficult to dismiss a player who won by four shots in 2015 and has finished second twice and third twice at the iconic Georgia venue.
He has been slightly inconsistent at times but his fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and third at the Valspar Championship suggest he could make another bold bid, even though he has not won a tournament for more than a year.
Outright odds @ 16/1 with bet365
Patrick Cantlay
World ranking – 4
Last five results – MC-3-T4-T19-T9
Cantlay’s confidence will probably be high after three top-10 finishes in his previous four efforts but Augusta has not been a happy hunting ground for the 2021 FedEx Cup winner, who has triumphed in seven PGA Tour events.
He has never finished better than ninth at Augusta and has posted just three top-10s in 23 major starts so he really has to prove that he can put it all together in the biggest tournaments.
Outright odds @ 20/1 with bet365
Justin Thomas
World ranking – 10
Last five results – 4-T20-T21-T60-T10
The two-time US PGA champion has finished in the top 15 at Augusta in three of the past four years and was eighth 12 months ago, so he usually makes his presence felt.
The quality of his iron player should make him a strong contender and, after electing to give the World Match Play a swerve, he was 10th last time at the Valspar Championship. So he heads to the year’s first major in decent nick.
Outright odds @ 20/1 with bet365
Cameron Smith
World ranking – 6
Last five results – T47-MC-6-26-29
The Open champion defected to play on the LIV Golf tour a few months after his triumph at St Andrews, and he won in Chicago on the breakaway circuit last year.
He looks likely to provide one of the strongest challenges from the rebels and his record of 2-10-3 in the past three years, as well as the confidence gained from breaking his major duck in 2022, should mean he is in the running.
Outright odds @ 22/1 with bet365
Jason Day
World ranking – 35
Last five results – 5-T9-T10-T19-T5
The former world No 1 has been plagued with injuries in the past few years, but he has been performing consistently well since the start of 2023 and it would not be a huge surprise if he made a bold challenge.
He has missed the cut on his previous two visits to Augusta but has three top-five finishes at the venue, so he cannot be easily dismissed.
Outright odds @ 25/1 with bet365
Tony Finau
World ranking – 13
Last five results – T14-T20-T24-T19-T17
He has got in the groove in the past 12 months when he ended a five-year wait for his second title at last year’s Northern Trust, and he has gone on to win three times since.
Finau can generate plenty of length off the tee, which is always pretty handy at Augusta, and his best finish was fifth when Woods won in 2019.
Outright odds @ 25/1 with bet365
Xander Schauffele
World ranking – 7
Last five results – T10-T33-T39-T19-T5
He has some Augusta pedigree as he was tied for second behind Woods four years ago and was then tied for third when Hideki Matsuyama claimed the Green Jacket two years later.
Schauffele has finished in the top three of two other majors and has been consistent over the past six months without claiming a big prize since the Scottish Open in July.
Outright odds @ 25/1 with bet365
Verdict
It is little surprise to see Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy at the head of the market as they have both the performances at Augusta and form over the past few months to justify the hype.
It has been more than 20 years since a successful defence, however, and McIlroy tends to put plenty of pressure on himself at the Masters, so it could pay to look a little further down the list.
Supporting both Jordan Spieth and Jason Day could bring rewards.
Spieth has shown flashes of his old magic that made him a tournament-winning machine a few years ago and his Augusta record is phenomenal. Day is slowly getting back to his best and could also make a bold bid where he has been in the frame before.
